Uber Frugal Month Challenge, Well Why Not?

Happy New Year Traveling Wallet Readers! It is officially 2017 and it's time to use that new years motivation to tackle exciting tasks. This month the Roamer clan is  participating in the Frugalwood's Uber Frugal month challenge. When Mrs. Frugalwoods first mentioned it, I was intrigued. But because we are trying our hand at travel hacking. Or credit cards rewards, I wasn't sure we would be participating. Our 3 month deadline to meet spending is Jan 14. That is 14 days, where we would be more worried about spending rather then saving. But we (more…)

Why a 30 day challenge?

Hello! Happy March. Today marks the beginning of the month but most importantly the beginning of a new 30 day challenge. 30 day challenges are a big thing here in the blogosphere. They are easy content fodder. Throw down a challenge invite the readers and let the competition begin. I've seen some really good ones and some that don't quite make sense. Of course the best ones for me are the ones that rile me up enough to join the group. It doesn't really matter whether it's home, food or personal almost anything seems to be able to be boiled down to a good ol' 30 day challenge. (more…)

capsule wardrobe challenge

Challenges really seem to put a smile on my face and I'm excited to try something new, taking a 3 month capsule wardrobe challenge but blending multiple ideas and inspirations. In case you don't know a capsule wardrobe is a limited number of items that you mix and match to make multiple outfits. How to Start the Process for a Capsule Wardrobe So clearly we are going to need to pick our items, but it isn't as simple as picking some items out of our closets. Most of us have items in multiple places and maybe even in storage(bins). Well at least I did. So I used some of my knowledge of 5S principles to get me started. The first step is... Take all the clothes out of everywhere you store…

31 Day Challenge Update

Ahh, its about time I pump out this update. Before the new year started I decided that I was going to participate in the minimalists' game. The challenge was set to start on January 1st, and go until the 31st. The idea? To eliminate 1 item the first day, 2 items the second day and so on. To my surprise but joy, Mr. Roamer decided he would participate too. In essence doubling the amount of items we would have to purge. Before the Challenge [caption id="attachment_734" align="alignleft" width="169"] Our closet. Looking exceptionally unkept.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_913" align="alignleft" width="300"] A side of our room, boxes abound[/caption] Per our pictures you can see some of the stuff that has accumulated in our apartment. I'm kind of bummed. I really wish that I would have gotten…

Will you take the 31 day Challenge?

I don't really write about minimalism but it is implied... oh wait I haven't implied it either. Well then ok... As an aspirational traveler but also a parent stuff can easily become burdensome. I've been working on trimming down on my possessions because they really have become more trouble then they are worth. To help keep me motivated and also spurn me into action. Aggressive action! I am going to do the challenge posed by The minimalists( you can read more about it here). I will be starting January first.  I will try to follow the rules but I am making one alteration. I know how difficult it can be to resell stuff so I am giving myself 30 days to sell the stuff that I think I can sell.…

Extra Income Challenge Wrap Up

Last month I visited money manifesto, he had posted a throw down which I though was a great idea. So I took the extra income challenge. Here is my pledge The Pledge I, The Roamer, accept the extra income challenge. I challenge myself to make an extra $100 of income this month. I plan to make this income through a yard sale where I get rid of unneeded items.I will also be registering to UBER to provide lifts. I will report my progress next month on the next Extra Income Challenge update. And challenge it was. I'll just start with the punchline. I failed. Oh man did I fail.  Now let's get to the details. The Yard Sale My yard sale was actually a community sale hosted by my son's…

I accepted the Extra Income challenge

As the Roamer here at the Traveling Wallet, I am reading up on how to optimize. One of my goals is to retire early and another is to be a better parent. One of the methods I plan to use to reach these goals is by diversifying my income stream. If I can earn income from home then I can be home with my kids. If I can earn side hustle income while holding a 9-5 then I can save more aggressively and reach FIRE.(That's Financial Independence Retire Early for any new to the term.) Which means that the sooner I reach it the sooner I can stay home with my kids. It's a never ending circle of finding a way to spend more time with the kids! So one…

2023 Traveling wallet yearly review: Full time job and some travel

Reviewing yearly has been a habit of mine since my college days. It is eye opening to look back and see how much can change and happen in the span of a year. My kids are a constant reminder of the passing of time. 2023 was my first year of full time engineering work in over 7 years. It was an adjustment. It felt like work swallowed up the whole day. Looking back, we did make time for adventures in 2023. Reviewing the year and pictures really are the best. It really does help you appreciate and remember the year's adventures, accomplishments and just the lovely day to day things like tending a garden. How did that all matched up to my 2023 yearly goals? Here is what I set…

Capsule 8: Spring & 2 years of capsule wardrobes

I first started my capsule wardrobe experiment back in July 2015. I had no idea it would last this long. Today I wrap up 2 years of living with capsule wardrobes. All just 3 months at a time. When I started I didn't commit myself to doing it forever, but it has been such a good experience that I have kept going. Spring 2017 was the final chapter of year 2. My 8th capsule. Here is what I picked out and wore. (more…)

Welcome Its spring of 2017 and I am currently living in capsule number 8 and getting ready to close up year 2 of dressing with a capsule. I am 3 capsule wardrobes behind. Here is capsule number 5. I am planning to keep these updates short and simple. This isn't a fashion blog  so I don't want to have 3 capsule posts in 3 weeks. 2016 Goals: Year End Review

It's January, and you know what that means. Goals for 2016 This past year I decided to try something new. I had read that I could be more focused if I just chose one goal and really bore down on it for a whole month. It sounded interesting and logical. It sounded like I would get more, deeper work done. It was also a way to avoid my natural tendency to overload myself with goals. The year before I had jot down 24. Instead this year I could only choose 12 goals for the year.  (more…)

Net Worth Update : Our growth in 2016

Hey Traveling Wallet readers, It's net worth update time. When I first posted my net worth out for the world to see, I wasn’t so sure how I felt about it. I'll be honest I'm still a bit paranoid about the whole thing. It’s probably not a surprise that I feel like I am leaving myself a bit exposed. While I am not sharing my net worth here monthly I do track it regularly. Finally, I decided that giving a yearly snap shot was probably not so bad.  (& since Mr. Roamer is on board, then all engines go) Today I will be sharing the growth we saw in the last 12 month period. Sometimes, a year can just fly by, but it turns out 365 days is a lot of time…

Surviving 1 year of colorful capsule wardrobes, and cutting my wardrobe by 47%

The traveling wallet is our journey through many of life's facets. That's why I like to cover a few main topics here on the blog: travel, money, family and minimalism. This post is for those interested in minimalism. In this case creating a minimalist wardrobe and purging the items that just hung around. This year I completed a whole year of living with capsule wardrobes. If you don't know what they are, it's when you remove everything from your closet and pick only some of your clothes to live with for 3 months. In my case I choose to hover around 38 items. It included: tops, bottoms, and shoes. In the end I created 4 capsules to cover the whole year. After the experiment I can say its a great gate…

Our California Road Trip and 4 must see views

Mr. Roamer made a beautiful desktop background of our recent California road trip. I look at it and remember. Oh yeah, I still haven't told you how it went. So today lets talk travel & family. If you haven't heard. We are moving to Michigan in about 1 year. This caused us to rethink our yearly vacations. We decided to cancel our Michigan trip, in favor of checking out California. It's funny how that works. We've lived here for over 5 years and have only seen a few places. Opting instead to fly out of the state during our time off. This year was different. (more…)
